Networking’s Biggest Lie

By Keith Woolgar

There may be absolutely certainly the fact that face-to-face business networking is an example of the best, or even the most efficient ways to market yourself, your charity or ones small business.  It is a fact.

As a rule, networking is less expensive than conventional advertising and marketing, and ties you personally to your company, right in front of your customers or prospective clients.  Bring in your itinerary to a function, ink an appointment on the spot!  Hours of cold calling and target marketing; stand aside!  Who wouldn’t rather meet their purchasers and potential customers in an casual, familiar, non-confrontational atmosphere like a business networking event or via a networking group?

Go figure!  Why else might there be a great number of business networking breakfast meetings, business networking happy hours, speed networking events (you name it) and a lot more cropping up continuously?

Gone are the era of being constrained to enrolling in chambers of commerce and other service organizations, because now you can connect with, greet and glad hand other business networkers around the clock, seven days a week if you need to.  Imagine, BNI and LeTip are business networking brand names comprised of thousands of business networkers alone…it’s a business networking world, folks!  Now, with the newer “online venues” like Facebook, business networking seems to have gone viral as housewives, Realtors, cake bakers and Fortune 500 companies interact by means of the new “social media”, that was not even a widespread phrase just three short years ago.  We as a society network, network, network!

The lie is that “business networking” succeeds.  The fact is , that going to networking events, enrolling in groups, being on Facebook, etc. will not work whatsoever being a stand alone event to closing sales or engaging in business.  Without a doubt, it takes much more…

Have you ever come back from a networking event with a pocketful of business cards with zero resulting business? Like, zero?  Sure, you have.  Did you ever leave a networking group due to the fact “it didn’t work”?  Of course you did.

Facts are, the churn rate (current users falling out being replaced by fresh paid members) could be around 50% per year in a given networking organization.  Half dropping out, being replaced by new, enthusiastic newbies, who will in turn drop out aftera lame attempt at making networking work for them.
