Want To Purchase Fish Oil? First Check These THree Things
January 29, 2010
When you purchase fish oil it is influencing to use price as your reason to buy, however this might not be the smartest thing to do because as with anything you get what you pay for. You see, there has been an increment of the number of makers producing this product because of the demand for it as its health properties become more well known. The trouble though, is that this industry is not heavily regularised and so you will get makers making a cheap product to sell in volume which may not be offering you what you need and could possibly be detrimental for your wellness. That said, here are what I reckon to be the three most critical things to look for when you buy fish oil.
1)Purity When you buy a supplementation it is essential that you ascertain that it has gone through a purification procedure called molecular distillation. The reason for this is because oily fish are renowned for carrying mercury and PCB’s, which if taken for a continual period of time can be harmful for your health. The challenge is though, that it is not a cheap process and therefore most companies do not do it, meaning in effect they are dispensing polluted tablets in the marketplace. Often they will try and get around this by boasting their tablets are pharmaceutical grade, but that does not mean they have been purified.
2) Freshness One of the most common problems with fish oil supplements is that people complain about having fishy burps after consuming them. The grounds for this is that some producers make their pills with rancid fish. This happens when they buy their stock from fishermen who have frozen their catch at sea, which enables them to stay at sea longer, catch more and sell in greater volumes at a cheaper price. So ideally your tablet should be made from fish that is caught and prepared within a short time frame.
3) DHA levels The essential fats that come from oily fish and do so much good for you are EPA and DHA. Of the two you want a capsule that is higher in DHA as this is the one that is more positevely linked with health benefits such as protecting your heart, nurturing your brain and being an anti inflammatory. The thing is though, when you look at most capsules you will see they are greater in EPA and although not bad for you, ideally you want it the other way around.
This may sound like a lot of effort to go to when you buy fish oil, but believe me, once you have found a supplement that matches this criteria then you will discover the difference. And I say that to you as an individual who has been consuming these kind of supplements in one sort or another for over 10 years now and has had the fishy burps.
