Model Train Trivia

February 9, 2010

Designs for model trains were copied after real-life trains that have grown to be an icon of progress and development.  Enthusiasts around the world clamor to get their hands on model trains that are modeled after the most prominent trains of all time.

Nearly all of the different early trains that were the engineering spectacles of their time may now have been retired from service but they have all been commemorated in small scale model locomotives that by now are running along on millions of homes around the world.

Model trains have also become part of the pop culture phenomena because of television shows made for kids.  !A number of of the famous ones are Thomas And Friends and Chuggington.

The first trains ever created started in the early 1800s and its evolution have come a long way.  The form and the function of locomotives have evolved in numerours ways for almost two centuries.  Manufacturers of model trains create scale models that are derived regularly on steam locomotives and diesel-electric locomotives.

Steam-powered locomotives

Steam locomotives were the first ever mechanized locomotive and transportation.  This type of train move along by burning coal to heat water and the steam created from the heated water produces the motion of the locomotive.  Even though steam locomotives are not as economical or as quick as the other kind of locomotives that came after them, they are more prevalent in terms of appreciation and their memorable form is what makes steam locos appealing than other model trains modeled after modern locomotives.

Diesel Electric Trains

Diesel electric locomotives gradually replaced steam locomotives as their operating cost and speed showed more efficiency.  Although they were invented in the early 1900s, diesel-electric locomotives are still used nowadays by rich and poor nations alike.  Diesel-electric model locomotives are the second most common line of popular model trains after model steam locomotives.

Assorted sizes in model trains are classified in scales and gauges and the scales that get a hold of the most fan base are H0 and 00.  Because of their popularity, these two scale ranges have become a standard measurement for a margin of model train collectors.  In Europe, the most popular scale is the 00 and the H0 is the most popular in the US.

Different manufacturers of model trains such as Bassett-Lowke, Hornby, etc. are dedicated to offer model train fanatics the sets and collections they sought for.  A lot of their model trains are modeled after popular steam and diesel locomotives of different models and classes.  Each scale model train produced are also made in limited editions in order to make it a rare and a worthy collector’s item.
